Out of hours healthcare

Where can I go to get help for my health out of hours?

Health issues unfortunately don’t leave us alone at the weekend and people are often in need of medical assistance out of hours. Using NHS guidelines, we have provided some advice and information on where you can go for help when your GP is closed.

Where you can go to get help out of hours

The NHS pledges to provide services at a time that’s convenient for you. They have produced guidance on how best to access services out of hours that can be found in full online – NHS out-of-hours services.

  • Phone NHS 111
This service is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This is a service that provides medical advice as well as the details of the services closest to you that help you deal with your need following a medical assessment.
  • Visit your local pharmacy
Your pharmacist will be able to help you with a number of issues. How your pharmacy can help
  • Visit your nearest NHS walk in centre
If you need treatment for minor injuries or illnesses such as cuts, bruises and rashes you can visit your nearest NHS walk-in centreurgent care centre or minor injuries unit. These are not suitable for treating long term conditions. To be seen at one of these services you do not need an appointment, or to be registered. You may be referred to one of these services by NHS 111, or you can just walk in.

When to visit an urgent care centre

Take a look at the NHS guidance on when to visit an urgent care centre (walk in centre) to find out if this is the right service for your health needs.

Should I go to A&E?

Accident and Emergency departments are for serious or life-threatening emergencies and should not be used as an alternative to a GP appointment. You should go to your nearest A&E if you require urgent medical attention.

For example if you’re experiencing:

  • loss of consciousness
  • chest pain
  • breathing difficulties
  • fits that are not stopping
  • severe bleeding that cannot be stopped
  • severe allergic reactions
  • severe burns or scalds
  • stroke
  • major trauma

Not all hospitals have an A&E department. Use the A&E service search to find your nearest A&E department or read the guidance in full from the NHS to find out more about when to go to A&E.

Out-of-hours medicines

Running out of your medication during the holidays or over the weekend can be a big worry. If you run out the medication you need outside of your GP practice’s normal opening hours and need some urgently, there are a few steps you can take to get an emergency supply.

Where you can get medication from will depend on whether you already have a prescription or whether a prescription is needed. Take a look at the guidance from the NHS to find out more.

Rothbury Hospital

Key Milestone for care at Rothbury Hospital

Key milestone for introduction of new model of care at Rothbury Community Hospital

An important step has been taken in the development of a new flexible care model for patients in Rothbury.

Plans by Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust to provide a package of community treatment, NHS beds and much-needed residential care from Rothbury Community Hospital have now been confirmed.

NHS Northumberland Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), which plans and commissions the county’s healthcare, approved the new model at its recent board meetings before the proposals were also presented to Northumberland County Council’s Health and Wellbeing Overview and Scrutiny Committee on Tuesday, 5 April.

Earlier this year, the trust announced that it had created a new strategic partnership with a care provider, Rothbury Cottage Care Ltd, part of local family care business People First Care, which will mean it can provide a flexible number of beds to meet the needs of people in Rothbury, while continuing to deliver extra support for people’s health and care needs in their own home.

As part of the scheme, Northumbria Healthcare is committing to utilising NHS beds within this facility – with numbers moving up and down flexibly to meet patient needs – which aligns with initial work in other parts of Northumberland and North Tyneside.

Marion Dickson, the trust’s executive director for nursing, midwifery and allied health professionals, said “We are really excited about this innovative model of care and are looking forward to getting started, as we believe this is very much the way of the future given the blend of hospital and care home beds alongside care for people in their own homes.

“Our plans were disrupted by the Covid-19 pandemic so it is great that we are now pushing on with the backing of our commissioners in Northumberland as well as the local authority.”

Rothbury Cottage Care Ltd will operate a 12-bed unit in partnership with the trust for people needing respite care, rehabilitation services, longer-term recuperation or end-of-life care. This facility will be supported by a wider team of district nurses, GPs and nurse practitioners.

Rachel Mitcheson, service director for transformation and integrated care at the CCG, said “We have been working with colleagues at the trust on the Rothbury plans for a number of years now and we are well aware of how important it is to get this right for the community.

“Our board has now backed this proposal as we believe this approach will ensure the best provision for patients in Rothbury and surrounding areas, as it provides a mix of important health and care services.”

The progress has also been welcomed in by community representatives in Rothbury.

Katie Scott, coordinator of the Save Rothbury Community Hospital Campaign, added “After the independent panel directed the NHS, four years ago, to work with local people on reopening the beds, we have kept up a constant dialogue with the NHS team.

“We are pleased the CCG approved this proposal and we are happy with the scrutiny that Northumberland county councillors have undertaken.”

Cllr Steven Bridgett, county councillor for the Rothbury Division, added “I am pleased that the proposals put forward by Northumbria Healthcare in relation to Rothbury Community Hospital have been endorsed by both the CCG and Northumberland County Council’s health scrutiny committee.

“It is my view that they are indeed in the best interests of the residents of this area, but we now need to see some progress on the ground and this facility opened as soon as possible. It has been five-and-a-half years since we lost the use of beds in the hospital and now that we have some firm proposals regarding the future use of the beds, residents quite rightly need to see some swift action and this facility opened as quickly as possible.”

Wooler GP Practices Propose Merger

Cheviot Medical Group and Glendale Surgery in Wooler have applied to NHS Northumberland Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) and NHS England to merge into a single practice. The practices already work closely in the same building at Cheviot Primary Care Centre to deliver services, having moved in together over 15 years ago.

Since the summer of 2021, Cheviot Medical Group has had a GP on long-term sick leave and Glendale Surgery has been providing active support. There was already a lot of cross-practice work going on but this has increased further still to ensure patients remain cared for. The proposed merger will formalise this relationship and embed the cooperative approach that has been developing over the years but accelerated over the past year.

The application will be reviewed by the CCG and NHS England in early April 2022 with a decision expected by the end of June 2022.

Patients and residents are now being asked to share their views on the proposed merger. This can be done in the following ways:

  • Online: Complete thisonline feedback form
  • In the practices: please ask at reception for a feedback form. This can be filled out anonymously if you wish – you do not need to give any personal information if you choose not to.
  • By email: Glendale Surgery: glendaleadmin@nhs.net or Cheviot Medical Group: Admin-A84032@nhs.net
  • By letter: Write to your practice  and mark it for the attention of the Merger Management Team. Glendale Surgery or Cheviot Medical Group, Cheviot Primary Care Centre, Padgepool Place, Wooler NE71 6BL.
  • By telephone: Glendale Surgery: 01668 281740 Cheviot Medical Group: 01668 281575.
  • Public meeting: A public meeting will be held in conjunction with Wooler Parish Council and the local County Councillor –  details to follow shortly.
  • Contact us here at Healthwatch Northumberland to give your views on the proposal.

Please note that the practices are also, at the same time, proposing to form an administrative union with two other local practices to form a partnership called Lindisfarne Health.  Since the administrative changes involved with Lindisfarne Health will not affect patients, the practices not asking for feedback on this, only on the proposed merging of the two Wooler practices. More information is available from the surgeries.

Frequently Asked Questions and answers from the Wooler practices

Why merge the practices?

The NHS is changing and NHS England is asking practices to work together across larger patient populations. We want to ensure that our patients continue to receive high quality medical care.

This merger will offer many benefits. The current practices use the same clinical computer system, and in merging, we will be able to access patient electronic records through a single system and log in, which will make it easier for our GPs and nurses to view patient information. We are also able to bring together our management and support teams for more efficiency.

Bringing together our practices in this way means we can share our pool of knowledge and skills. Particularly as we know people often have multiple needs.

There is a national shortage of GPs and practice nurses and a merged practice will be better able to recruit and retain the doctors and nurses we need. The workload of a current GP Practice has grown in recent years. We want to make sure that clinical time is spent more in patient care not in paperwork.

The practices are also part of the Well Up North Primary Care Network working with key local partners to expand the services we can offer every patient. This is to provide an integrated care system for the benefit of our local communities. This means that we can provide more seamless, joined up patient care. We want to remove the barriers to accessing services and address current challenges.

Recent changes in Cheviot mean this is an opportunity to secure stronger practice services in Wooler going forward and to adapt to any changes that may arise in the future with one larger primary health care team operating from the same building you access your services from now.

What will this mean to me?

Patients will not see any real change. You will be able to access the same services at the same place as you do now. Over time we may be able to offer more specialist clinics and services as we will have access to a wider healthcare team.

What will the new practice be called?

The name of the merged practice will be Wooler Health.

Will I be able to see my usual doctor or nurse?

Yes. Continuity of care is valued by us and our patients. Our clinical staff will remain but form a larger single team in future. You will have more choice not less.

I have a long-term health problem – how will this affect my care?

Every effort will be made to ensure that you continue to see your preferred clinicians for ongoing care. If you usually attend a clinic for diabetes or asthma for example, then this will continue as normal.

Will there be any change to the service we receive from community services such as district nurses, midwives or health visitors?

No. The community teams will continue to work with the merged practice as usual to provide care to patients. Having only one practice to coordinate with will help them in fact.

Will the new merged practice have access to my medical records?

Yes, the two existing practices’ clinical records system will be combined into a single system so that our team will be able to access your records when necessary for your care. Your records will be handled with the same high level of attention to confidentiality.

Will your opening hours change?

The opening hours at our practices will remain the same. We are not planning to alter our services as a result of this merger. Like all practices, we may vary some opening hours because of patient demand and clinical resources from time to time but the merger itself will not have any effect.

Booking appointments – will I see any changes?

You will still be able to book an appointment by the same existing methods.

We will continue to develop our navigation team who will help guide you to the most appropriate appointment for your needs, which is another benefit for all our patients from this merger.

We are keeping our appointment system under review due to Covid-19. We hope to be able to offer you some alternatives to same day access in future. For now, we continue to follow the national rules in having a telephone or online-first appointment system and the facility to see patients face to face should you need this.

Prescriptions – how will these be affected?

There should be no change to the way in which you order or receive your prescriptions. If you order your prescriptions online then we may need to update your details. Further information will be given, and we will contact you if this is the case. Our dispensaries will continue as they are.

Will there be a new Patient Participation Group?

A Patient Participation Group (PPG) is a group of patients, carers and GP practice staff who meet to discuss practice issues and patient experience to help develop and improve services. PPGs play a key role in helping patients get the best out of their GP surgery.

Our existing PPGs had already agreed to merge to form a single group representing the patients of both practices. With this change, it will simply represent the patients of the single merged practice in future instead.

If you would like to find out more about the PPG or to get involved, please contact us via our existing practice contact details as above.

What is the timescale envisaged for the merger?

We plan to submit a formal application to the CCG and NHS England at the beginning of April. If we are successful, we are hoping to merge by the start of July 2022.

Dentistry

Dentistry in Northumberland since March 2020

The COVID-19 crisis has affected many areas of the NHS both locally and nationally. One significant issue that people have raised nationally is about access to dental care.

Data from the Department of Health highlights that almost 1,000 dentists working in 2,500 roles across England and Wales left the NHS last year. This is having an adverse effect on members of the public being able to see a local dentist for both regular check-ups and when emergency treatment is needed. Not only has this been frustrating, but many people have been left in pain or discomfort as a result. Some individuals have been offered the option of having private treatment, but this is not affordable for many.

Without improved access to NHS dental care, not only do people risk facing greater dental problems in the future, pressure will increase on overstretched hospitals and GPs. Untreated dental problems can lead to pain, infection and the exacerbation of other health conditions such as heart and lung disease and stroke. This national picture is echoed in Northumberland, and throughout the second half of 2021 we received feedback from the public that accessing NHS dental services was very difficult, whether registering with an NHS dentist or getting treatment.

With the need to now have lull time in the consulting room between patients, due to COVID-safe guidelines, there is no longer the capacity within NHS dental services to meet their targets, let alone deal with the backlog of appointments that didn’t go ahead due to the lockdown.

Following an initial meeting between Healthwatch Northumberland, Healthwatch North Tyneside, Healthwatch Newcastle, Healthwatch Gateshead and Healthwatch South Tees, the opportunity to work collaboratively with local Healthwatch partners across the North East was offered to all local Healthwatch. Collectively we agreed that there is a need for better access, to NHS dental services, but that this needed surveying and reporting both locally and on a regional basis.

Three other local Healthwatch joined the group: Healthwatch Hartlepool, Healthwatch Stockton-on-Tees and Healthwatch Darlington. These eight teams from the North East and North Cumbria Healthwatch Network agreed to undertake a joint project to understand the concerns of their respective local communities.

The aim of the study was to determine whether accessing NHS dental services is being raised by a small number of people having a problem or whether it is a more widespread issue. If it is a widespread issue, then to use our findings to:

  • Influence the North East and North Cumbria Integrated Care System (NE&NC ICS), local service providers, and NHS England to improve access to NHS dentistry.
  • Inform the national picture through sharing our findings with Healthwatch England who are calling for reform of the NHS dental contract alongside the British Dental Association (BDA).
  • Support improved information for patients regarding NHS dentistry.

NHS Galleri Trial

NHS trials new cancer test

Northumberland and South Tyneside have been selected within the North East and North Cumbria to take part in the world’s largest trial of a revolutionary new blood test that can detect more than 50 types of cancer before symptoms appear.

People aged 50 to 77 are being asked to look out over the coming days for a letter from the NHS inviting them to take part in the trial.

Participants must not have had a cancer diagnosis or treatment in the last three years and have no concerning symptoms. They will have a small blood sample taken at mobile clinics that will visit Northumberland at the end of April and throughout May as well as South Tyneside in May. Participants will be invited back after 12 months, and again at two years, to give further blood samples.

The potentially lifesaving Galleri™ test checks for the signs of cancer in the blood and the NHS-Galleri trial, the first of its kind, aims to recruit 140,000 volunteers nationally, including thousands in South Tyneside and Northumberland, to see how well the test works in the NHS. The trial team are inviting people from a wide range of backgrounds and ethnicities to ensure results are relevant for as many different people as possible.

Dr Hassan Tahir, primary care lead on the GRAIL project for the Northern Cancer Alliance, said most people were now aware of the benefits of finding cancer earlier when it is easier to treat.

“By taking part in this trial, people in South Tyneside and Northumberland will be at the forefront of developing a test that has the potential to save lives from cancer in England and around the world,” he said.

“Registering for the trial is easy – just look out for the letter which will show you how to book an appointment online or over the phone. If you receive a letter do please consider being part of the trial. The test is a simple blood test that has the potential for identifying cancers at an early stage, this includes head and neck, bowel, lung, pancreatic, and throat cancers.”

Dr Robin Hudson, medical director at NHS Northumberland Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), added: “At Northumberland CCG, we are very excited about this ground-breaking study into early cancer detection. We would encourage everyone who is eligible to take part as we believe it could make a huge difference to our population by preventing lives being cut short by this awful disease.”

The Northern Cancer Alliance is helping to ensure participants who test positive in this region get the necessary follow-up appointments.

The NHS-Galleri trial is being run by The Cancer Research UK and King’s College London Cancer Prevention Trials Unit in partnership with NHS England and healthcare company, GRAIL, which has developed the Galleri test. All participants will be advised to continue with their standard NHS screening appointments and still to contact their GP if they notice any new or unusual symptoms.

Sir Harpal Kumar, President of GRAIL Europe, said: “We’re delighted to partner with the NHS to support the NHS Long Term Plan for earlier cancer diagnosis, and we are eager to bring our technology to people in the UK as quickly as we can. The Galleri test can not only detect a wide range of cancer types but also predict where the cancer is in the body.”

Patients whose condition is diagnosed at ‘stage one’ typically have between five and 10 times the chance of surviving compared with those found at ‘stage four’.

Initial results of the study are expected by 2023 and, if successful, NHS England plans to extend the rollout to a further one million people in 2024 and 2025. The trial is the latest initiative launched by the NHS to meet its Long-Term Plan commitment of finding three-quarters of cancers at an early stage by 2028.
